What are the 5 Ways to Improve Your Kid’s Eating Habits?

“One should eat to live, not live to eat” -Benjamin Franklin

Very well stated, but how many of us really implement it? Not many, right?

With the rising numbers in Obesity, parents are constantly concerned about their kids’ eating habits and looking for a practical approach. We need ways which will work without creating stress. But often times, we end up with a regime that is hard to keep up and ultimately cravings take over. This for sure is a NOT THE OUTCOME we want. So, in the event that many moms-dads are facing the same issues, we want to share  some tried and tested ways which Team iQuriousKids recommends:

  • Don’t Ban Junk Food completely

Balance is the most important thing when developing healthy eating habits. When kids get their first taste of crunchy, sweet or salty food, it’s difficult to get them unhooked. Parents should restrain the quantity of treats that children are permitted to eat every day, instead of boycotting them totally. That way, kids won’t be as enticed to need what they can’t have. A rule in my house says a iQk mom, “have a full healthy meal with veggies et. al and then you can have a piece of cake; a bag of chips and such”

  • Encourage Them to Eat Smart at School

Go through your kid’s school lunch menu and sit with him/her to recognise their most favoured choice. Guide them about the difference between junk food and healthy food. That way, going forward your kid will know about selections they need to make, and will pick up more of the  nutritious nourishment choices. In a lot of schools the portions and food groups are predetermined, so watch their lunch account regularly to see  if they are eating a additional snack that is unhealthy.

Urge them not spend money on sugary or salty treats, and give them a lot of snack bites, for example, apples, oranges, avocado etc., to carry along with them to school. Rule: If its a snack you pay out of your pocket child!

  • Avoid Buying Unhealthy Foods in Bulk

In the event that you need to purchase drinks and such, go for the smallest quantity, rather than the bulk. For instance, purchasing a big pack of fried chips is not ideal even at a party. The idea is to eliminate the unhealthy junk out of your kids’ habits, slowly and gradually because in the end, it all comes down to human nature and habits!

  • Nutritious Food Choices: Try and Try Again

Don’t be disheartened if your kids act stubborn and turn away from food items like broccoli or salad. It takes time for them to learn and develop the taste of nutritious food items. Don’t use compulsion – it  might make them act more stubbornly but try to cook it pretty  – add some color and shapes to make nutritious food interesting. It might tempt them to eat.

  • Set a Good Example

Young kids love to follow their parents. You are the most ideal model for your kids. Your opinion and actions make a big difference in their lives. Take advantage of this “monkey-see, monkey-do” behavior and make healthy eating choices yourself. Eat snacks and meal in an enjoyable manner especially fruits and vegetables, so that they notice it and follow in your footsteps. It’s important to set a good example and make mealtime, an enjoyable time for them to encourage healthy eating.
